About Me

My photo
I am a History Teacher at Providence hall Jr. High Charter school. I have a love for helping students reach their potential. I created this blog in order to showcase my ideas for my classroom. Only a few of these lessons have been tested in an actual classroom and any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for visiting, Mr. Owen

Assessment

The teacher understands and uses formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social and physical development of the learner.

Belief Statement: Assessment should be used to evaluate learning and teaching. It should be fair and balanced to assess if students are getting the key concepts in the content. Teachers should use formative assessment through their lesson plans to help guide teaching and as well as summative assessment to show the overall effectiveness of the overall units.

Artifact 1: WWII Unit

Reflection: This unit was designed around assessments and within each lesson are outlined formative and summative assessments. These assessments will help me as a teacher to understand if students are grasping the concepts discussed in each lesson. For example, in lesson one we have students draw a chart as we discuss different actions taken by the United States and whether it shows a stronger pull to isolation or a pull to involvement in World War II. This is linked with think, pair, shares which is where students get into small groups of two and discuss the topic for a minute and then share their thoughts with the class. Through this type of summative assessment I can know if students are grasping the concepts the same day that we are discussing it.
Also within each lesson are the summative assessment questions that are linked to the lesson and will be used on the final unit test. By having the summative assessment with the lesson it is a good reminder as to what will need to be covered and what will be assessed in the end of unit test. It is also important for students to have multiple forms of summative assessments ranging from short answer, multiple choice, fill in the blank, and essay, all of which are implemented in this unit assessment.
Students need to know what is expected of them. I have demonstrated this through rubrics. With each creative assessment in this unit there is a rubric outlining what is expected and the point value associated if they have everything they need.
This unit is a well thought out plan for each lesson and what will be assessed and connected to the essentials. These lessons have not been implemented in a classroom, but one problem that I could see is that with having a set lesson and lesson plan, outside factors could change the way it is implemented and will need to be adapted. With all of these lessons that I have created teacher flexibility and understanding is key.
