About Me

My photo
I am a History Teacher at Providence hall Jr. High Charter school. I have a love for helping students reach their potential. I created this blog in order to showcase my ideas for my classroom. Only a few of these lessons have been tested in an actual classroom and any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for visiting, Mr. Owen

Common Core

History and the Common Core

As of right now there is no Common Core outlined curriculum for Utah or Idaho, and no end of level test. After all who can decide what is and is not important in history there is just too much. However the Ideals of the common core can be put into practice in a history classroom and create a learning environment that is meaningful and rewarding to the students.

Belief Statement: There are many that hear the words Common Core and think that it is the end of public education as we know it. That is not the case, it is nothing new, and no they are not rewriting history, or just giving scripts for teachers to read. There may be issues with implications right now, but it is nothing new. The Goal of Common Core is to have an education that ties all subjects together, and builds knowledge one lesson at a time. I can only speak from my own experience as a substitute for the past two+ years I have seen its benefit and at first I was confused with the math implications, but have since come to understand it better.

Under Common Core Student’s will be encouraged to:
  1. Examine and analyze primary sources
  2. Use evidence to support an argument
  3. Understand historical context
  4. Read multiple accounts and perspectives
  5. Question: Who? What? Why? When? How? Where?
  6. Take a position and defend it with evidence
By using these six guidelines when preparing lessons students will begin to use and exercise their minds, and become informed adults.
These six points came from notanotherhistoryteacher.edublogs.org
