INTASC Standard 10—
The teacher fosters relationships with school colleagues, parents, and
agencies in the larger community to support students’ learning and well-being.
Belief
Statement: It
is my belief that a school community is vital to the improvement of students.
Community involves many aspects of school systems, first of all other teachers
and PLC’s can help teachers when they encounter problems with students and
teaching. Each teacher has different experiences which can be applied to many
situations. Parents are an even more influential part to the school community.
They know their student better than anyone and can influence students and help
to promote learning. The community as a whole should be a large aspect of the
teaching whenever possible. As a teacher I will modify my lesson plans to fit
the community’s interests and demographics, as well as involving members of the
community wherever possible in my curriculum.
Reflection:
It is important to
show parents that I care about their students. In this letter I outline for the
parents or guardians a few of the tools that I will be using to help their
students be responsible and to help parents keep track of what is happing in
their students’ classroom. I talk about parents’ access to the district’s
website to stay on top of their students grades, how students will periodically
be sent home with progress reports, and how if students miss a class they can
get a hold of the missed assignments and hand outs.
Wherever I
go to teach I intend to make a letter for each of the classes that I will be
teaching. If you have the parents on your side you have a great resource to
helping students and the school. If there is an open discussion with parents,
then they also have a say when it comes to the school and district policy.
Artifact:
Dear Parents or Guardians,
My name is Mr. Owen and I am your students’ US history
teacher. I am sending you this letter as a way to let you know all of the great
resources for you and the ways that you can see what is going on with your
student.
n
Class website, the school district offers a web
site where you can check on your student’s grades for all of his/her classes.
As part of that website there is a link to our classroom, where you can see what
is happening. The site is: www.yourschooldistrict.edu
n
Monthly grade reports: once a month I will be sending
a progress report home showing any missing assignments. I will be asking
students to show you this report and have you sign it for extra credit for your
student.
n
I believe that students have the responsibility
to make up any missed work. In my classroom there is a folder with all of the
assignments for the past two weeks, including handouts and worksheets.
I am very excited to
be teaching your student this school year and hope that if you have any
concerns that you will call or email me (987)654-3210 or mr.owen85@gmail.com
Sincerely,
Mr. C. Owen
