The teacher understands how students differ in their approaches to
learning and creates instructional opportunities that are adapted to diverse
learners.
Belief
Statement: Every
student’s brain is wired differently and so instruction does not always work
the same for every student. I understand this because my own experiences as a
student. For example, if teachers only teach phonics and not word memorization,
then students that are wired for memorization miss out and vice versa.
Instruction must vary and or be specialized to each student when it is needed
in order to help each student reach their potential.
Reflection 1:
In this progressive
era unit I have outlined different lessons and activities that provide a wide
variety of learning styles. Prior to the unit, activities will be divided into
different lessons according to the learners of the class. My favorite part of
this lesson is the I-Search and
independent research projects (pg.2-3). In this research project, done throughout the unit, students will choose what
aspects of the research projects that they would like to do, such as reading
biographies, creating art, or creative writing. Giving students the opportunity
to use their strengths to create a project that is meaningful to them and
display their talents.
This unit
has not been used in a classroom but was created in my history capstone. I can
see that it will take work to implement it into a classroom but it will be very
beneficial in development of the lessons as a resource not simply a set group
of lessons.
Some
problems with this way of setting up units would be that in the weeks and days
before the unit begins I will need to finalize each lesson, compared to having
preset lessons. On the other hand this unit is useful if the class is short on
time and needs to cut back on parts of the lessons. Also, it can be expanded to
fit students interests and help diverse learners.
Reflection 2: The Memorial project was an excellent way to give students the choice between research topics and the way to present them the information that they found. Choice is key for so many students to succeed in the classroom and the Memorial project does not require one way of doing things.
