About Me

I am a History Teacher at Providence hall Jr. High Charter school. I have a love for helping students reach their potential. I created this blog in order to showcase my ideas for my classroom. Only a few of these lessons have been tested in an actual classroom and any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for visiting, Mr. Owen

Communication & Technology

Communication & Technology

The teacher uses knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.

Belief Statement: Communication is key to reaching students in a way that will convey what students need to know. Everything that teachers do carries a message to students. It is a fact that most students resave information through nonverbal communication; teachers need to watch what they do. Teachers must also use all types of technology and media convey the information. These technologies and forms of media can connect to students in ways that just lecturing does not.

Reflection: In this lesson students will learn important tips on taking good notes. They will also be introduced to a technology tool to help students take more effective notes: the Livescribe Smart Pen. The Livescribe Pen records audio and connects the audio to writing and can be uploaded onto a computer to be shared with the class. As a way to ensure that students practice taking good notes, each student will take the smart pen for one class period and take notes to be shared with the class on the class website. This will be a resource for students that missed a class and to review impartial notes.
Although this has not been implemented in my classroom, it is a great technological resource for students and helps students take notes. There may also be problems with students that do not wish their notes to be put on the website. The way I intend of dealing with this issue is to make it optional for them to put it on the website. If they just tell me on the corner of their notes, I will then put the notes from one of the other classes’ so that there are no missed sets of notes for each class.
